Cigarettes After Sex is the debut studio album by American ambient pop band Cigarettes After Sex. It was released on June 9, 2017, by Partisan Records and received positive reviews from critics.
After an EP in 2012 and several singles released in 2015 and 2016, we finally have the full-length debut from the Brooklyn-based Cigarettes After Sex. The first thing the listener notices is vocalist Greg Gonzalez’s androgynous voice (with many thinking it is a woman singing). After that initial shock is the lugubrious, slow and sticky as molasses crawl that will remind listeners of Mazzy Star’s breakthrough album So Tonight That I Might See. This is not mere imitation, though, as what reels listeners in and makes this so easy to play over and over again is the quality of the songwriting. Simply put, many dream-pop bands don’t have songs this good nor do they have singers this good who aren’t afraid to put their vocals up front without burying them with effects. Those things, along with the wonderful production (by Gonzalez himself) are what makes this release truly exciting.
